What is piles ? Dilatation of radicles of rectal veins within the anal canal is called piles. The medical term for piles is hemmorhoids.Compared to arteries veins are weak due to thin walls and hence any backpressure in the veins can make them tortuous. There are three rectal veins namely superior, middle and inferior rectal veins.Any obstructions or increase of pressure in these veins can predispose piles.

The mere act of sitting on the toilet bowl for pro-longed periods - even if you just read there - can make you vulnerable to hemmorhoids. The problem may also be inherited and tends to run in families. "As you know, 90 percent of varicose veins are inherited. The problem is genetic. It's caused by weakened valves and vein walls. When you inherit that tendency, there's not much you can do. That's true with hemmorhoids," said Dr. Ed T. Corpus Jr., a general and vascular surgeon at the Vein Care Clinic at Ferosa Condominium in Manila.

Hemmorhoids are associated with constipation and straining at bowel movements as well as pregnancy. The causes of hemmorhoids involve genetic predisposition. Alcohol can also cause alcoholic liver disease leading to entrance hypertension. Caffeine on the other hand can cause general hypertension. Additional factors that can influence the course of hemmorhoids, especially for those with a genetic predisposition, are obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. The most common symptom of hemmorhoids inside the anus is bright red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. Symptoms usually go away within a few days.

4,Gangrene: Here the tissues in the piles and nearby skin die due to lack of blood supply. 5,Suppuration: When the piles suppurate it can produce abscess with discharge of pus.

Treatment may include warm baths and a cream or other medicine. Surgery to remove hemmorhoids may be done if other treatments don't work. Apply petroleum jelly or aloe vera gel to the anal area. Healthy habits can help you prevent hemmorhoids or keep them from getting worse. Taking herbs and dietary supplements that strengthen vein walls, such as butcher's broom, horse chestnut, bromelain, and Japanese pagoda tree extracts. Eating fiber-rich bulking agents such as plantain and Psyllium seed husks to help create soft stool that is easy to pass to lessen the irritation of existing hemmorhoids.

Other common symptoms are itching and burning during and after bowel movements. This is caused by mucus and feces that stick to the bulging hemmorhoid and irritate the anal opening.

Bleeding internal hemmorhoids produce fresh blood in the stool, along with varying degrees of pain and discomfort. The blood from internal hemmorhoids often appears on toilet paper after wiping, or as scarlet streaks in the stools. Should blood be noticed in the stool, it becomes necessary to investigate the blood as it often indicates a more serious condition lying underneath.

Some times internal and external piles occure in same individual. Factors responsible for piles:-- 1) This is a familial disease. 2) Piles is seen only in animals maintain an erect posture. This is due to congestion in the rectal veins due to the effect of gravity.

Depending upon the situation there are two types of piles. 1) External piles. 2) Internal piles. 1) External piles:- This type of piles is seen outside the anal opening and is covered by skin.It is black or brown in colour. This type of piles is very painful due to rich nerve supply in this area.

Pregnancy itself does not cause hemmorhoids but it may hasten their development. This is caused by hormones in the woman's body that dilate blood vessels more easily. The same goes for women with many children and those who regularly use laxatives and enemas.

6. Corticosteroids reduce inflammation and can relieve itching.

Hemmorhoids bleeding, due to its problematic nature, can make a patient shy and reclusive about the condition. It also leads to social embarrassment and a constant fear of public exposure about the condition. However, thinking that hemmorhoids will go away with time is nothing more than wishful thinking. Neglecting hemmorhoids may lead to worsening of the condition and will pave the way for expensive surgery. With the first signs of hemmorhoids bleeding, consult the physician immediately and start treatment. Early attention will prevent future complications and stop the hemmorhoids bleeding.

Hemmorhoids are quite common and so, in all likelihood every one of us knows someone who has or has had hemmorhoids. Hemmorhoids, or piles as they are also referred to as, are among the most common disorders to afflict mankind. Fortunately, hemmorhoids by themselves pose little risk to health and are seldom serious. But they can still lead to a good deal of discomfort and can be embarrassing, troublesome and can also disrupt normal life to varying extents.

"There are three complications of hemmorhoids. If they always bleed, the patient may lose a lot of blood and become anemic. Another problem is prolapse which is what happens when an internal hemmorhoid protrudes from the anus and can't be pushed back. This can cause a lot of discomfort and pain. A third compli??cation is thrombosis which occurs with external hemor??rhoids. A blood clot forms within the veins, it hardens, and the patient experiences excruciating pain," Corpus said.

1) Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. 2) Take fibrous food. 3) Avoid excess intake of meat, prawns, crabs ect. 4) Keep a regular timing for food.

"When one complains of rectal bleeding, the physi??cian has to determine its exact cause. Hemmorhoids are the most common cause of this symptom but it can also be due to rectal polyps or rectal cancer. So a complete evaluation is in order," Corpus said.

2) Bleeding:- Bleeding comes in splashes while pressing for stool.Bleeding may be profuse in some cases. 3) Protruding mass:- In external piles the swelling can be felt around the anal orifice. In case of internal piles initially it can not be felt. When the disease progresses the piles protrude during stool and will go inside automatically. When the condition becomes worse the protruded piles will not go back in to the anus.
